Modern Synthesis, a London-based biomaterials startup catering to high-end fashion brands, has secured a $5.5 million funding round led by Extantia Capital. The Seed 2 funding round also included contributions from Artesian and Collaborative Fund, allowing the company to expand production at its pilot facility and serve more brands currently on its waitlist.

The firm, co-founded by former Adidas designer Jen Keane (CEO) and synthetic biologist Dr. Ben Reeve (CTO), is pioneering the use of nanocellulose produced by sugar-eating bacteria, which is then combined with natural textiles like hemp, linen, and lyocell. The process creates biomaterials ranging from leather-like textiles to transparent films, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional materials.

A Revolutionary Process

Keane compares the technology to “how rebar is used to reinforce concrete,” stating that the biomaterials are completely free of petrochemicals and plastics while being compatible with traditional textile manufacturing equipment.

Modern Synthesis is collaborating with Danish fashion brand GANNI to introduce its biomaterials in commercial products, including GANNI’s signature Bou Bag. Investors see this as a game-changing innovation, with Extantia Capital partner Yair Reem noting that the material “rivals traditional leathers in look and feel but can also offer something entirely new that excites designers.”

Sustainable

Scalable and Sustainable

Initially, Modern Synthesis grew nanocellulose-producing bacteria directly with textiles, but to enhance scalability, the process has now been divided into three distinct steps. First, nanocellulose is cultivated in fermentation vessels. Second, the material undergoes structural enhancements to modify its strength and flexibility. Finally, it is integrated with textiles to create various forms, from soft, drapable fabrics to more rigid, leather-like alternatives.

Keane highlights the company’s expertise in transforming nanocellulose into high-value, low-impact materials, stating, “While anyone can grow nanocellulose, our patents and know-how allow us to manipulate its nano structures to improve its properties and create a broad spectrum of sustainable textiles.”

Scaling Up Production

The company recently installed pilot equipment, producing its first large biomaterial panels. Additionally, Modern Synthesis has begun external technical trials with manufacturing partners, showing promising results. With this latest investment, the firm is poised to scale up production and integrate its biomaterials into mainstream fashion supply chains, setting a new standard for sustainability in the industry.

As demand for eco-friendly materials grows, Modern Synthesis aims to revolutionize textile production, offering a viable alternative to traditional leather and synthetic fabrics. With strong investor backing and increasing interest from luxury fashion brands, the company is on track to redefine the future of sustainable fashion.
