ZBiotics Sells 15 Million GM Probiotic Shots, Expands Product Line

ZBiotics has surpassed 15 million sales of its genetically engineered pre-alcohol probiotic shots, while expanding its portfolio with a second product focused on gut health. According to AgFunderNews, the San Francisco-based biotechnology company is leveraging engineered bacteria to create a new category of functional probiotics with applications beyond alcohol metabolism.

The company, founded by Zachary Abbott, PhD, has been marketing its flagship product directly to consumers since 2019. It later expanded to Amazon and is now increasing its retail presence across the United States through specialty stores, restaurants, and beverage chains. The company says it is already profitable, with a compound annual growth rate of approximately 113% between 2021 and 2025.

According to AgFunderNews, ZBiotics' flagship product contains a genetically engineered strain of Bacillus subtilis designed to produce the enzyme acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) inside the gut. The enzyme helps break down acetaldehyde, a toxic byproduct generated during alcohol metabolism.

Rather than manufacturing the enzyme through industrial fermentation, the company engineered the probiotic bacteria to produce it after surviving stomach acid and germinating in the intestine. The shelf-stable formulation is sold as a single-use shot intended to be consumed before drinking alcohol.

Abbott explained that consumer demand has continued to grow despite the product's premium price, noting that customers value the possibility of experiencing a "better next day." He added: "The price is not proving to be a barrier given the value we're providing."

The startup has also introduced a second product called Sugar to Fiber, a powdered probiotic designed to convert dietary sugars into prebiotic fiber within the digestive tract. The product uses another engineered strain of Bacillus subtilis that produces the enzyme levansucrase, which transforms fructose molecules into levan, a naturally occurring soluble prebiotic fiber.

According to the company, the objective is not to reduce calorie intake or promote weight loss, but rather to increase daily fiber consumption and support a healthier gut microbiome. Abbott emphasized: "This isn't about calorie reduction, weight loss, or blood sugar management. It's about fiber creation and having a diverse mix of fibers and all benefits of that for a healthy microbiome."

According to AgFunderNews, both products have undergone animal toxicity studies and currently hold self-affirmed GRAS status, while formal FDA GRAS submissions are being prepared.

The company says laboratory testing has demonstrated that its engineered probiotic efficiently produces ALDH after germination and removes acetaldehyde significantly faster than conventional bacterial strains. Human studies using fecal samples are planned as the next phase of validation.

Looking ahead, ZBiotics plans to expand its pipeline of genetically engineered probiotics targeting additional health applications. The company is also developing formulations that combine prebiotics, probiotics, and polyphenols, incorporating technologies recently acquired from January AI.

International expansion is also part of its long-term strategy. However, Abbott believes the United States still offers considerable room for growth. "We think we're still just scratching the surface," he said.
