The Seattle-based agricultural robotics company Carbon Robotics surpassed $100 million in revenue in the year ending March 2026 and is now working toward becoming a publicly traded company. Founded by Paul Mikesell, the company is expanding its laser weeding technology and autonomous tractor systems while developing a new agricultural machine that has not yet been announced.

The company plans to pursue an initial public offering (IPO) as it continues to scale its business. Founder and CEO Paul Mikesell said agriculture alone offers enough room for Carbon Robotics to build a large independent company without the immediate need to diversify into other industries.

“It’s our intention to get to the point that we’re an independently publicly traded company, so that would involve going through an IPO. That’s the path that we’re on,” Mikesell said, according to AgFunderNews.

Carbon Robotics currently operates in about 20 countries, with its strongest markets in the United States, Western Europe and Australia. Its laser weeders are designed primarily for major vegetable-growing regions, where growers face high labor costs and increasing pressure to improve production efficiency.

The company estimates that the market could support thousands of laser weeding machines each year. Its autonomous tractor technology represents an even larger opportunity, with Mikesell estimating a potential market of between 30,000 and 40,000 tractors annually.

The company has expanded its product range with the second generation of its G2 LaserWeeder, introduced in 2025. The platform now includes different machine sizes, ranging from equipment suited to farms of around 50 acres to systems designed for operations covering hundreds of thousands of acres.

The modular architecture allows growers to configure the equipment according to the size and requirements of their farms. Carbon Robotics is also developing another agricultural machine, although the company has not yet revealed details about the product.

A second major area of growth is autonomous tractors. Carbon Robotics converts existing tractors into autonomous machines using a combination of cameras, radar, lidar and software.

The technology is designed to operate beyond laser weeding. It can also be used for tillage, cultivation, irrigation and other agricultural operations, according to the company.

Mikesell said Carbon Robotics is considering raising additional capital to accelerate the expansion of its autonomy business, following a $20 million extension to its Series D financing.

The business case for laser weeding is based largely on reducing labor requirements and improving crop performance. According to Mikesell, growers can also benefit from higher yields, earlier harvests and lower water and fertilizer requirements because crops are exposed to less chemical and mechanical stress.

He said yield improvements of 30% to 50% have been documented in university research and through growers' experiences, although those results can vary depending on farming conditions.

The company estimates that growers can generally recover their investment in less than three years, while some of its fastest customer payback periods are under one year.

Financing has also become an important part of the business model. Mikesell said banks have increasingly shown interest in financing LaserWeeder purchases because of the machines' residual and resale value. Some lenders now offer operating leases that allow farmers to avoid a large upfront capital expenditure.

Carbon Robotics has also chosen to sell and support its machines directly, rather than relying primarily on dealerships. The company believes direct relationships with growers allow it to respond more quickly to technical issues and customer needs.

That approach also extends to international markets. Carbon Robotics operates its own sales and support teams in the regions where its LaserWeeders are available. Many employees have farming backgrounds and local knowledge of crops, soils and agricultural practices.

For the company, the next stage is to continue scaling its agricultural robotics business while preparing for a potential public listing. With more than $100 million in annual revenue, a growing international presence and new autonomous farming technologies under development, Carbon Robotics is positioning itself as a major player in the next generation of agricultural automation.

According to AgFunderNews, the company does not currently need to move beyond agriculture to reach significant scale, as the potential markets for laser weeding and autonomous tractors alone could support substantial future growth.
