Founded in 2022, Bonsai Robotics has embraced an "AI-first" approach to reimagining agricultural machinery, moving away from traditional designs built for human operators. Its technology focuses on vision systems that allow machines to navigate in harsh conditions, such as dust, darkness, and debris, without relying on GPS, cellular signals, or the internet.

Tyler Niday, co-founder and CEO of Bonsai Robotics, highlights: "With autonomy, you can rethink machinery design and do more with less." This approach enables the company to develop solutions that not only replace labor but also optimize equipment use and reduce operational costs.

Applications in Nut Harvesting

Bonsai Robotics’ technology has been deployed in nut orchards, including almonds, walnuts, and pistachios. The harvesting process involves shaking, sweeping, and collecting nuts, which generates significant dust—a major challenge for autonomous machines. Unlike traditional systems that rely on Lidar or stereo vision, Bonsai’s AI-driven solution uses machine learning to recognize environmental features and build a 3D model, allowing for reliable navigation even in dusty conditions.

Niday notes that beyond reducing labor dependency, their technology can cut machinery needs by up to 30%, leading to significant capital expenditure savings for growers.

Expansion and Future Plans

With more than 40 units deployed in the U.S. and Australia, Bonsai Robotics plans to use the newly raised funds to scale commercialization and adapt its technology for new crops and regions, including the Iberian Peninsula. The company is also expanding its engineering team to support these initiatives.

The next targets for Bonsai Robotics include citrus and apple orchards, where its AI model can provide significant efficiency and cost-reduction benefits.

Investors and Vision for the Future

Tom Biegala, founding partner at Bison Ventures, states: "Nowadays, if companies are not using AI or advanced computational technologies in some form, they’re probably behind the curve." While AI is not a silver bullet, it is a crucial enabler for increasing productivity and efficiency in agriculture.

Ari Wright, a principal at Bison Ventures, adds that Bonsai Robotics is "the perfect example" of how AI can transform real-world processes, not only by replacing labor but also by reducing capital costs and fundamentally rethinking agricultural production systems.

With this funding and a clear vision, Bonsai Robotics is well-positioned to lead AI integration in agriculture, providing innovative solutions to key challenges such as labor shortages and the need for more sustainable and efficient farming practices.
