More than 5,000 native trees have been planted in Cheshire as part of a major environmental initiative led by conservation organizations, public agencies, and community volunteers. The project created five hectares of new woodland, expanded wildlife habitats, and advanced biodiversity and carbon-reduction targets, making it one of the region’s most significant recent restoration efforts.

The initiative was carried out through a partnership involving The Mersey Forest, Chester Zoo, and the Environment Agency. Together, they established more than five hectares of woodland on land belonging to Chester Zoo, equivalent in size to approximately 40 Olympic swimming pools.

The project resulted in the planting of 5,200 native trees, including species such as pedunculate oak, downy birch, wild cherry, and alder. The new woodland builds on earlier restoration efforts that added nine hectares of forested land in the area.

Beyond increasing tree cover, the project was designed to strengthen local ecosystems. Conservation planners incorporated managed open spaces into the woodland layout, creating interconnected habitats that support pollinators, birds, bats, insects, and other wildlife.

A key innovation of the initiative is its focus on woodland restoration science. Thousands of mycorrhizal pellets were placed alongside a portion of the newly planted saplings as part of an ongoing research program. These pellets contain beneficial fungi that naturally connect with tree roots, helping improve nutrient absorption, increase resilience, and protect against certain soil-borne diseases.

Researchers hope the findings will help improve survival rates for young trees and influence future woodland restoration projects, particularly in areas with degraded soils.

The project also supports broader environmental objectives. Chester Zoo aims to manage 30% of its 265-hectare estate for biodiversity by 2030, while regional organizations are working to improve ecological connectivity and strengthen climate resilience across Cheshire.

According to Lauren Taylor, Woodland Advisor for The Mersey Forest, the partnership demonstrates how collaborative conservation projects can create long-term benefits for local communities, wildlife, and the environment.

Ruby Merriman, Estate Biodiversity Manager for Chester Zoo, highlighted the importance of expanding woodland habitats for species already living on the estate, including tawny owls and brown long-eared bats. Larger woodland areas provide additional nesting, feeding, and shelter opportunities while increasing habitat diversity across the landscape.

The project also aligns with regional conservation strategies aimed at reversing biodiversity loss and supporting national climate commitments. New forests play a critical role in storing carbon, improving air quality, reducing soil erosion, and creating more resilient ecosystems.

Volunteers from the Environment Agency and local community groups participated in planting activities alongside professional conservation teams. Their efforts helped transform former agricultural land into a growing woodland that is expected to provide environmental benefits for decades.

As governments and conservation organizations seek practical ways to address biodiversity decline and climate change, projects like this demonstrate how habitat restoration, scientific innovation, and community involvement can work together to create lasting environmental impact.
