The investment, spearheaded by Mitsubishi's Agrex group and supported by Banco do Brasil's corporate venture fund managed in collaboration with Vox Capital, highlights growing confidence in Genica's pioneering approach to sustainable farming solutions.
Founded in 2015 by entrepreneur Fernando Reis and agricultural scientist Prof. Dr. Carlos Labate from the University of São Paulo, Genica specializes in bio-based products designed to enhance crop resilience and productivity. These include bio-inoculants, bio-stimulants, and bio-pesticides tailored for staple crops such as soybean, corn, and sugarcane—key exports for Brazil on the global agricultural stage.

"We started investing in biologics back in 2009/2010, which was a little too early," explains Francisco Jardim, managing partner at SP Ventures, a longstanding supporter of Genica. "But we saw adoption, we saw regulatory progress, and we anticipated Brazil's rise as not only a dynamic but also the largest adoption market for biologics globally."
Genica's innovative product portfolio reflects an evolution through distinct phases of development, as described by Gerson Marquesi, head of research and regulatory affairs. Initially focusing on single-microorganism solutions, the company has progressed to complex formulations leveraging microorganism metabolites for enhanced efficacy across diverse agricultural environments.

Currently in its third generation of products, Genica addresses critical agricultural challenges such as soybean rust—a menace responsible for substantial crop losses and economic impacts in Brazil. Marquesi notes, "Our latest products utilize metabolites rather than live bacteria cells, optimizing anti-fungal compounds through tailored fermentation processes. This approach not only accelerates impact in the field but also reduces reliance on traditional chemical fungicides."
Looking ahead, Genica plans to intensify its focus on soil health and regenerative agriculture, envisioning a fourth generation of bio-based products aimed at fostering holistic farm management systems. Underpinning this strategy is the REGENERA initiative, which integrates biologicals with precision agriculture techniques to enhance biodiversity, nutrient efficiency, and pest management over multi-year cycles.

"The support from Mitsubishi and Agrex provides us with a strategic opportunity to expand our market footprint," remarks Marcos Petean, CEO of Genica. "Our partnership will enable us to reach new international markets while reinforcing our commitment to sustainable agricultural practices."
Brazil's pivotal role in the global biotechnology landscape was underscored at the recent Salinas Biological Summit, where experts highlighted the country's regulatory advancements and educational efforts driving biologic adoption among farmers. Dr. Pam Marrone emphasized, "Brazil serves as a model for educating growers on adopting sustainable practices—a testament to its leadership in ag biologicals."

With approximately 50% of revenue sourced from agricultural retailers and the remainder from large agribusiness enterprises and farmers, Genica continues to lead as a specialized provider in the biologics market. Their ability to integrate biological solutions with digital technologies and comprehensive farm management strategies positions them uniquely in delivering sustainable agricultural outcomes.
As Genica prepares to scale operations and explore new global markets, the company remains steadfast in its mission to redefine agricultural sustainability through innovative biotechnological solutions.
