In the rapidly evolving ag biologicals sector, Israeli startup BioArmix is taking a novel approach to combat bacterial pathogens, a largely underserved area in agriculture. Founded in 2023 as a spin-off from Hebrew University, BioArmix is commencing field trials of its innovative biological solution that harnesses naturally occurring, non-GMO predatory bacteria. These bacteria target gram-negative pathogens that threaten vital crops, including potatoes, sugar beets, apples, and cassava.

Dr. Tzvi Zvirin, co-founder and CEO, highlights the uniqueness of their strategy: "While antibiotics and traditional treatments are widely used, they often lead to resistance and harm beneficial bacteria. Our predatory bacteria actively hunt and consume harmful pathogens without negatively impacting the crop’s microbiome." This natural predation mechanism reduces the likelihood of resistance development, making it a promising alternative in both agriculture and human medicine.

BioArmix's solution has a remarkable two-year shelf life at room temperature, a significant improvement over many existing biologicals. Zvirin elaborates, “We encapsulate our predatory bacteria using innovative formulations that allow for long-term storage and on-demand application, whether through seed coatings or irrigation systems. Once activated with moisture, the bacteria remain viable and ready to act.”

The initial focus is on deploying encapsulated Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus to tackle soft rot Pectobacteriaceae, notorious gram-negative pathogens affecting potatoes. Early results from controlled environments have shown promising efficacy, with the company now moving to large-scale field trials in Israel.

As the agricultural sector grapples with the phasing out of antibiotics and copper-based pesticides, the need for effective solutions is urgent. “Currently, options for farmers are limited,” Zvirin notes, highlighting that many diseases come with seeds, creating a persistent challenge. With the impending bans on sterilization methods like hypochlorite, farmers are left with dwindling choices.

BioArmix aims to scale its production processes efficiently, leveraging advancements that allow simultaneous cultivation of predators and prey, thereby reducing costs. Zvirin predicts that users could save up to 50% of their crops, realizing a return of 5 to 6 times their investment.

The company seeks strategic partnerships to introduce its product into the market, initially focusing on the potato sector. By collaborating with established biopesticide producers, BioArmix hopes to diversify antibacterial offerings, filling a critical gap in agricultural solutions.

As BioArmix prepares for its next funding round, it positions itself at the forefront of the fight against bacterial pathogens in agriculture, a domain that has been largely overlooked in the surge of biofungicides and bioinsecticides. Investors are keen on the potential of such innovative biological solutions, marking a significant shift in agricultural practices towards sustainability and effectiveness.

This groundbreaking approach not only promises to enhance crop protection but also aims to ensure a healthier agricultural ecosystem. BioArmix is set to reshape the landscape of agricultural biology with its pioneering technology, addressing a pressing need in sustainable farming practices.
