Moa Technology, a UK-based agricultural technology company, has secured £22.2 million ($29.6 million) in a Series C funding round to accelerate the development of novel modes of action for weed management. The investment will support the advancement of the company's most mature research programs toward commercialization while expanding its discovery platform to combat the growing global challenge of herbicide-resistant weeds. According to AgFunderNews, the company has already identified more than 80 potential new modes of action capable of overcoming weed resistance.
Founded in 2017 as a spinout from the University of Oxford, Moa Technology focuses on discovering entirely new biological pathways through which herbicides can attack weeds. Rather than developing direct biological substitutes for existing chemical herbicides, the company searches for innovative mechanisms that can improve weed control while addressing increasing resistance.
Herbicide resistance has become one of agriculture's most pressing challenges. More than 500 unique cases of herbicide-resistant weeds have been identified worldwide, affecting 21 of the 31 known herbicide sites of action and reducing the effectiveness of 168 different herbicides. At the same time, regulatory pressure and growing demand for more sustainable crop protection solutions continue to reshape the industry.
According to AgFunderNews, Moa's most advanced discoveries have already demonstrated strong performance during international field trials against difficult grass and broadleaf weed species across multiple growing seasons.
The company has also identified a new class of biological molecules known as Amplifiers, designed to work alongside existing herbicides. These compounds can enhance herbicide performance and potentially allow farmers to reduce application rates. For intellectual property reasons, the company has not disclosed the technical details behind this technology.
The funding follows the announcement of a new multi-year research partnership with Corteva, which will use Moa's discovery platform to identify additional weed control solutions. The company also collaborates with Nufarm, Gowan, and Certis Belchim on several crop protection programs.
The Series C financing was co-led by Oxford Science Enterprises and Supernova Invest, with participation from the Agri Investment Fund (AIF), GrainInnovate, Magdalen College Oxford, and existing investors.
Moa plans to use the capital to move its three most advanced programs significantly closer to commercialization. Although the company has not announced a specific launch date, it confirmed that the research phase is nearing completion and regulatory submission could begin within the next few years.
Additional funding will support the expansion of its early-stage research pipeline and the continued development of the Amplifier program.
CEO Dr. Virginia Corless emphasized the importance of involving the agricultural sector directly in the company's growth.
"Through AIF in Europe and GrainInnovate in Australia, the farming sector itself is closely connected to the next phase of Moa's development, helping accelerate delivery of our solutions to the fields where they are so urgently needed."
She also acknowledged the difficult fundraising environment facing agricultural technology companies in recent years.
"Everyone in the sector knows that the agtech funding environment in general has become much tougher over the last five years, particularly once you move past seed stage, so it's a fantastic achievement to have completed a raise of this size in this context."
According to AgFunderNews, Moa believes that strategic partnerships with major agricultural companies have strengthened investor confidence while validating both the urgency of herbicide resistance and the commercial potential of its technology.
