Eclipse Ingredients Prepares Human Lactoferrin for Global Launch

The Australian startup plans to enter cosmetics first in 2027, followed by adult nutrition and, longer term, infant formula

Australian precision fermentation startup Eclipse Ingredients is preparing to commercially launch its human lactoferrin in 2027, starting with cosmetics before expanding into adult nutrition and eventually infant formula. The company has already signed memorandums of understanding with five distributors and begun transferring its technology to pilot-scale production.

According to AgFunderNews, Eclipse is pursuing a staged commercialization strategy designed to scale production while limiting the capital requirements that have challenged other precision fermentation startups.

Human lactoferrin is a protein naturally produced by the human body and found in immune cells, tears, saliva and, at its highest concentrations, breast milk. Eclipse is using precision fermentation to produce human lactoferrin for commercial applications.

Cofounder and CEO Siobhan Coster said the company sees an opportunity to differentiate the ingredient from bovine lactoferrin, which is already commercially available.

“Human and bovine lactoferrin are essentially different proteins, so there’s a 30% difference in amino acid structure between the cow version and the human version. The cow version is designed for calves, and the human version is designed for humans,” Coster told AgFunderNews.

Eclipse says its own testing has produced stronger results for the human version on human cells. Coster also pointed to potential applications involving iron regulation, inflammation, women’s health, sports nutrition and healthy aging.

Rather than building its own large-scale manufacturing infrastructure from the beginning, Eclipse has adopted an asset-light production model. The startup works with four research organizations that provide access to infrastructure, equipment and expertise ranging from micro-liter systems to 2,000-liter pilot-scale facilities.

This strategy allows the company to increase production gradually. Cosmetics will be its first commercial market because it requires lower volumes, giving Eclipse an opportunity to validate its technology and manufacturing process before moving into applications that demand substantially greater production capacity.

The next target will be adult nutrition, where the company sees growing interest in precision nutrition and food-as-medicine applications. Infant formula is planned as a longer-term market because it requires larger production volumes and a more demanding regulatory process.

Eclipse has made significant technical progress over the past 18 months. The startup has developed its first proprietary technology platform, is working on a second and has incorporated applied artificial intelligence across its development process.

The company has also started transferring its technology to pilot scale and is preparing for a future transfer to its commercial manufacturing partner.

“We’ve got two platform technologies and we’re executing at a speed that is unheard of in this space,” Coster said.

Eclipse operates primarily as a B2B ingredients supplier. Its commercialization model relies on distribution partnerships, with five MOUs already signed and additional agreements under development ahead of the planned global launch.

The first geographical targets will be Asia-Pacific and the United States, followed by the European Union. According to Coster, the company is pursuing a global regulatory strategy across its main target markets, although European authorization is expected to take longer.

For cosmetics, Eclipse already has local regulatory compliance and reports strong customer interest. That market will serve as the first step in a broader strategy designed to progressively increase production capacity and commercial reach.

The company says it has moved from its first fundraising round to approaching commercial launch in roughly two years. Its next challenge will be converting the interest already identified among distributors and customers into commercial-scale demand.

If that strategy advances as planned, Eclipse intends to take precision-fermented human lactoferrin from cosmetics into larger nutrition markets, with infant formula representing its long-term destination.
